About Grief and Loss

What is grief?

The Grief ® Recovery Institute says that grief is a normal reaction to any kind of loss emphasizing that grief is not pathological

Loss for the purposes of our discussion is defined by Rando (1993) as the physical or psychosocial removal, often injuriously, of something of value.

Why is it Important to Address Grief and Loss

  • It is estimated that up to 25% of depression related diagnoses are, in fact, related to unresolved grief reactions and one in 11 adults who face significant loss experience complicated grief (Hirsch, 2002).
  • There are numerous therapeutic endeavors and psychoeducational resources that have proven efficacy in facilitating opportunities to use this difficult life experience as a means for growth and transformation.
  • The need for grief education (psychoeducational) programs is universal.
  • Grief is a vehicle for transformation after loss of any kind.
  • Grief is very important to the process of psychospiritual development.
Because no two grief journeys are alike; each has its own gifts.
  • Grief is not a linear process; rather it reflects much back and forth movement and pain can resurface without predictability.
  • Grief therapy can not be harmful and is always worth a try in individuals without psychosis.
  • In fact, GRIEF THERAPY WORKS!
  • GriefRecovery® Outreach Programs work even better!
